Wormwood in 20 words or less:
Technically improved, and 100% brutal - a good step forward for a band that had severely failed to impress me during a past live performance.
The Band:
The Acacia Strain is an American deathcore band who specialize in heavy rhythms, slow and brutal breakdowns, and increasingly misanthropic lyrics. Although that isn't very uncommon in the genre at all. Going through some of their older material however, you can spot much of the technical evolution and improvements they've made to their music over the years - without taking away from their intrinsic brutal style.
The Acacia Strain's other releases include: ...And Life Is Very Long (2002), 3750 (2004), The Dead Walk (2006), and Continent (2008)
Jay's Take on Wormwood:
The first time I had ever heard The Acacia Strain was at a live performance in town, opening for Despised Icon. At first glance, they really didn't impress me - the sound quality at the show was also not very good, making the bands low tuning sound dirtier than a thai hooker. Up until that point I had essentially ignored the band, until the release of Wormwood, which is where I gave strain a second chance. Wormwood is a considerable improvement over their earlier work, and show off some technical improvements to go along with it. And also includes a guest appearance from Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed on the opening track. The mood of each track is dark, gloomy and brutal as all hell, with lyrics that push the envelope of darkness and misanthropy. Wormwood is the kind of record you want to listen to when you want to just break stuff - or unleash some of that inner rage in synch with its many slow, pounding, chuggy beats.
